About Open Source Software

Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open-source community.

One of [their] most important activities is as a standards body, maintaining the Open Source Definition for the good of the community. The Open Source Initiative Approved License trademark and program creates a nexus of trust around which developers, users, corporations and governments can organize open-source cooperation.

The Open Source Initiative

We incorporate the following open source software in our products.

Backgrounds

CentOS
(Community ENTerprise Operating System)
CentOS 2, 3, and 4 are built from publically available open source SRPMS provided by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor [(Red Hat)]. CentOS [(Red Hat Enterprise)] conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policies and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly removes the upstream vendor's branding and artwork).

BlueQuartz
BlueQuartz is the organization, founded by the Cobalt Users Group, to support the porting and maintenance of the source code for the Sun Cobalt RaQ 550 server [Administrative Graphical User Interface (GUI)]. In December 2003, Sun Microsystems released the source code for the popular RaQ 550 software under an Open Source based license. The Cobalt Users Group continues to participate in the deployment and porting tasks for the RaQ 550 based BlueQuartz system.
